Firstly,
I wish you all the very best in 2009, and I hope you
had a great Christmas.
Congratulations
to Team Schuh and all the junior teams who competed in
the NLCA Junior Championship held at the Caribou
Curling Club. Our club was well represented. All teams conducted themselves to the highest
standard of sportsmanship, a testament to themselves
and their coaches. The M&M Junior Nationals will
be held in beautiful Salmon Arm, B.C up in the Shuswap
Area from Jan 31 - Feb 8.For results, go to www.curling.ca
and follow the link.
There
will be a Silent Auction in support of our
Provincial Junior Men’s Champions Team Schuh held on
Thursday, January 22nd.Please make an effort to attend. There will be prize draws as well as our usual
Thursday membership Draw. Any
donations may be left with
Mike Morrissey
or any member of Team Schuh.
Men’s Zones are on this weekend at the club. The field consists of Teams Cunningham,
Peddigrew and Smith from the RE/MAX Centre and Team
Gushue from Bally Haly.Four teams compete for the two Eastern Zone
spots at the provincial in Stephenville.
Belated
congratulations to club-mate Joanne MacDonald on being
inducted to the Order of
Canada
.Like
many members who have excelled at other sports, Joanne
now enjoys curling as her winter pastime. She and her
teammates Chris, Lanie, Felix and Darlene, all new
members to the club this year, will be representing
Newfoundland and Labrador at the National Wheelchair
Curling Championship being held at the Lakeshore
Curling Club March 23-28.
Please
be careful in the parking lot, the company who clears
our lot does an excellent job but with all the
activity at the club they generally come by very early
in the morning.With
our changeable weather, things can ice up before
they're back again … so please be cautious. Also
remember not to park too close to the building’s
eaves as sometimes ice may fall.
Thanks
to
Geoff Cunningham
for your donation of furniture. We
can now sleep up to two teams and 1 manager.
Curlers
please respect the hard work that occurs daily …
maintain clean equipment, use hack protectors and
waste baskets, and be careful.

Fundraiser
for our Junior Men's Provincial Champions - Team Schuh
Thursday, January 22
There will be silent
auction and some prize draws. If anyone has
anything to donate, please bring it to Mike at the
Centre.
I hope you all are making an effort to get through
those chores and complete your shopping lists so that
you can find time to come by the club tonight for a
chance to join in our annual Christmas Sing-a-long. Of
course we will be doing five draws of $1000.00 our
traditional membership draw, some more turkey spins
and we will be drawing for the beautiful Ian Sparkes
print. If those things are enough to entice you may
want to come down to see myself and Paul Currie get
hung, figuratively I hope, at least for me, sorry Paul
every man for himself.
Deadline is imminent for Men's, and
Senior playdowns. 9pm today Dec 18.
The club will be closed from 6pm on Dec 23. It will
reopen from 1pm until 6pm on Dec.27. Junior zones
begin on Dec 28 at 10am and 3:30pm. The ice crew have
"scratched" the rocks they hope you enjoy.
The executive and staff wish you all a safe and happy
Christmas and a prosperous New Year it has been our
duty, privilege, and honour to serve you this past
year and we are looking forward to a banner year in
2009.
Merry Christmas,
Mike
To all club contacts and Zone
Directors:
This message is very important and time
sensitive. Please make sure this message gets to your
Ladies teams and ensure they understand the importance of
the issue. This message is on the NLCA website and was
discussed in detail at last year's AGM.
ATTENTION ALL LADIES TEAMS
As the NLCA is trying to accommodate both
curers and clubs by determining if there will be a need
for an Open competition the deadline for signing
up for the Ladies Open has been moved to Dec 18th at 5:00
pm. The reason for this is that there were not
enough teams signed up provincially to fill the quota of 8
teams in the Provincial championship. We are now
requesting any team that has an intention of playing in
the Open to sign up and pay the required entry fee to your
club manager or Zone Director. After the Dec. 18th
deadline it will be determined if an Open is required.
It is very important to sign up by this
deadline or you will lose any right to play in the Open.
NLCA
December 11, 2008
Hello Everyone,
Christmas
is coming, while we all love to get gifts, there are some things
we might need no one will ever think to get us or they may not
know that we even need them. Please take time to assess your
curling kit, does your gripper leave marks on the ice? Could you
use your slider to grate cheese? Are your pants threadbare? Do you
secretly buff your nails with your brush head? If so; first cut
your nails, then buy a new head cause the worn one you use is well
… useless.
Good
equipment may not necessarily make you a better curler, but it
could. Merry Christmas. Although this message was not prompted by
our resident purveyor of curling gear if you need anything from
Barrett's Curling Supplies George can be reached at 722-4969.
Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart and local sports shops also have some
supplies.
Thanks
to the elves who toiled to add some beautiful Christmas décor
throughout the club. I have heard many compliments so thanks,
Tish, Pam, Tina, Barb, Marian, Jeanette and Candy
Everyone
please remember to get your Christmas Draw tickets in before
December 18, in addition to the five draws of $1000 we will be
having our annual Christmas Sing-a-long led by Andrew Mercer. We
will also draw for the Ian Sparkes print. Congrats to Joanne Smith
on winning a nice large membership draw, the pot will start
building next week and we'll continue with Turkey draws.
There
are a limited number of New Years Eve tickets still available but
I'll be turning any remaining over to the band, Harvest Moon, on
Dec 15th. The tickets are $75.00 single there's a roast beef
dinner with all the trimmings, great live music, party favours and
champagne toast.
You may
have heard that the CCA and the Dominion Insurance Co. of Canada
have teamed up to recognize the curling masses, there will be
National Championships held in November 2009 for Club Champions.
While not all the details are finalized the rules are set on who
may comprise teams; the NLCA Provincial Championship will be held
starting March 25 in Gander. We'll find some space in our busy
schedule to contest a Ladies and Men's Club Champion to go on and
participate in this Provincial and (hopefully) National event.
Stay tuned.
We are proud to be hosting the NLCA Provincial Senior Ladies and
Senior Men's February 18-22 the work of many will make playing and
hosting this large event fun for all. We will need volunteers for
hosting, timekeeping, officiating, and maintaining the ice. If
you'd like to join the team that will be hosting the best
Provincial Championship this year please let me know, there will
committees formed soon.
Please
be careful as snow and ice collect on the lot, save the sliding
for inside.
We are now allowing mixed teams to sign up in the Tuesday
Social/Mixed League.
Sign up all your team or part of your team, players are available to
be added to partial teams. Couple and individual sign-up also
available. Times alternate weekly from 6:45 and
9:00pm. December sign-up closes Thursday, December
4th.
Thanks to all who have commented on thegreat ice conditions this year.We appreciate all your comments and your help in keeping the ice
clean. Last week I mentioned
the brushes installed at both ends of the sheet for cleaning your
brooms; a member pointed out that I neglected to mention the brooms
should be cleaned while held over a wastebasket. Some folks carry small nail brushes so they can clean their broom
whenever they see fit; please make sure the debris you shed falls into a
wastebasket not along the walkways or side of the sheet as it will
eventually end up under a stone.
Events
The Travelspiel is
next weekend Nov 21, 22, 23 we hope most of our competitive squads will
be contesting for bragging rights and cash. Sign-up
sheets will be available this week.
NLCA Provincial Senior
Women’s and Senior Men’s Championship: Will be held at our club on Feb 18-22.This will be a large event and many volunteers will ensure a
memorable time is had by all. If you’d like to be a part of the team

available at the bar: $75.00 single.
Security: The
signup sheet for Parking Lot Patrol doesn’t have many names, if you
can spare sometime before or after your games please sign up, a
consistent presence will help deter vandals and thieves. We have reports
that valuables are still being left in vehicles; please make an effort
to remove these from sight, let the thieves window shop elsewhere.

fill in the form located near the entrance / exit. Confirmation of
locker rental is required or we will be cutting off locks next week.

’s Furniture. This wall will be completed in the coming weeks and will
be adorned with banners and mementos of Championships won by the great
teams curling out of our club. Thanks
to the NLCA for providing financial support, to
Leon
’s and to our steadfast trio of volunteers. Will there ever be a week I don’t extend thanks to Garry,
Roy
and Wilf?

November 5, 2008
Hello Everyone,
Ice Maintenance
Well
we have been curling for about a month now and have managed to resurface
the ice and place some logos without any interruption of schedule.
This was accomplished through some long hours on Sunday and Monday;
thanks to Roy and Wilf for your dedicated assistance to Frank and
myself. Please use the brushes provided to clean your broom heads to
reduce debris on the ice and “picks”. Equally important not to
kneel on the ice or place your bare hands or fingers on the ice for more
than a second or two as this causes flat spots that can ruin a shot, and
they last throughout the game. Please stand up and watch your
great shot. If it is your tendency to kneel; praying for the shot
won’t help.
Events
The
Aloha Spiel is to be played on Saturday and Sunday a very fun
event entry is $80 per team or $20 per person.
Remembrance
Day Junior Clinic will run from 10am to 5:30pm Tuesday evenings

Thanks to
Barb, Leslie Anne, Pam, Tina and Tish for decorating ... the place looks
great.
Thanks also to the volunteer bartenders who helped with events
throughout the summer (Geoff, Paul, Harold, Gary, Leslie Anne, Andrew and
Tish). Their donated tips have purchased a new DVD player.
The club will soon be installing dimmers on the lights in the downstairs
lounge. There was a delay as result of the cost to do this for our
new system. The Board and Staff would like to sincerely thank Randy Blake
of N.D. Dobbin for a major contribution to this project. The dimmers have
been ordered and will be installed in the near future to further enhance
the lighting improvements at the club. We are already seeing the savings
on our monthly electrical bill.

please keep this in mind if you have done some shopping before
arriving at the club. Inside the club if you find any curling gear;
brooms, shoes, or gloves unattended please give it to someone on staff
for safekeeping.
Bell
or No bell:
Please remember that games are not necessarily 8 ends. If you are
playing the early draw remember there are other games to follow and
that the ice needs to be prepped. If you hear a bell that indicates
that you finish the end you are playing and may start another. If you
do not hear a bell please do not start and end if the is fifteen
minutes or less before the next draw begins.
Thanks

I thought that you might like to know that the painting that Brad Gushue did
for The Kidney Foundation of Canada is up on eBay for anyone to bid on. Just go
to www.ebay.ca and type
"Brad Gushue" into the search field and it will pop right up. There are also
paintings from other Newfoundland residents, including Alan Doyle and Bob

There's a warning today from police in the metro area. Residents are reminded to keep the doors to their homes and vehicles locked at all times. RNC say early Sunday evening a purse and
various personal effects were stolen from a home on Whiteway Street. Police say the homeowner had just arrived home, and left her purse in the front porch. RNC say moments later someone
opened her front door and stole the purse and the medications inside. RNC advise that people always lock their doors when away and at home.

NLCA this year has greatly increased their
communication to all curling clubs within the province and should be
congratulated for their diligent work in many areas.
Forwarded from NLCA
Hi everyone:
I was just into the Sport NL website which is linked on to our NL
website. www.curlingnl.ca and there is much information about grants,
scholarships etc. It is definitely worth a look. I was checking out the
scholarships that are available to our athletes. When you access the
Sport NL website go to "other links" and under "Sports Resources" go to
"Access sport applications" and there is a scholarship application form
that may be of benefits to any of our curlers who are attending post
secondary education classes.
Hope that this information is useful and informative to you and your
clubs.
Sincerely,
Barbara Pinsent.

Practice Ice
The ice is available for practice after the curling lessons tonight Wednesday from 9-11pm, and on Thursday from 4:30-6:30 pm.Thursday
evening after the lessons are over there will be a Superleague qualifier so no ices will be availble for practice. Friday and Saturday
there will be a limited number of ices available as the Superleague Qualifier continues.
We are happy to welcome all curlers back to exercise those special muscles that seem to hibernate after curling finishes. As a courtesy
to your fellow members we ask that curlers pay attention to when they go onto the ice. If after 1/2 hour you see that others are waiting
to get out please leave the ice; so that they may throw you may return to the ice when one becomes available.
Thanks for your respecting this policy.

Dear
fellow club member, for the last twenty years we have had a top notch
Junior Curling program. We have been blessed to have volunteers that go
over and above what was expected in order to deliver a program that is
the envy of any club not only in our province, not only in our country
but in the world. Our Juniors have been consistently stepping up to the
podium and in the past few years the alumni of our Junior program have
told the world that yes we are a bunch of Newfoundlanders and
Labradorians and yes we are here to take top prize.
Our
club is now looking for an individual to oversee the program. We have a
very well documented manual that will help guide the incumbent through
the year. It has a step by step program to lead you through the process.
There is a support staff in place that will be there to work with the
participants in the weekday and weekend programs. We are looking for an
individual who has a knack for organizing schedules and able to over see
the program to ensure it is running smoothly.
We
are looking for an individual who will help guide our future curlers,
you don't have to be a coach or for that matter you don't have to be
good at the game. You just need to have the ability to help organize the
program.
If
you are a person who likes dealing with youth, a person able to devote a
few hours a week, a person that can look into the eyes of a young
teenager and believe that person when he or she says "someday I am
going to win the Olympics in curling because I love this game" Then
you are the person we are looking for.
Please
contact Mike Morrissey or Paul Currie at the club for further
information.

Hello Everyone,
Things are starting to ramp up now,
but we have a few more events you may want to be a part of before the
season begins. This past weekend the Hey Rosetta concert went well
thanks to those who helped out, Susie Ennis, Vanessa and Aaron Mercer,
Joanne Smith, Meghan O’Brien, Zack Hall, Bill and Mark Budgell, Damien
Roche, Bill Day and Tom Jackman. Your help was invaluable.

are hosting Mainstream Wrestling billed as
North America
’s Biggest Live Tour. The show will feature a
Battle

If
you attended the
St. John’s
Curling Association’s Annual General Meeting on June 28th,
you heard several references to the need for volunteers. If you thought
this might be for you but didn’t know the details, here is some
information that might be helpful.
The
Club often needs help with events (especially in the summer) and with
improvements that can easily be done by volunteers. This often
helps us reduce costs and in turn allows us to do more with less.
Here
are some of the things you can do:
·For
large events in the ice shed:
oSet-up
(and take-down) of chairs and tables.
oBartending:
this does not necessarily mean using the bar system. We usually
set up smaller bars out in the shed that are easy to handle.
oBeer/Drink
ticket sales: if the event is large enough, we have set us small tables
to sell beer/drink tickets. This allows us to run the bars without
worrying about cash which means patrons are served fast!
oRestocking
the smaller bars.
oGathering
empty bottles and glasses.
·Club
Maintenance:
oPainting:
most years, there are things that need painting so if you can use a
paintbrush, you can help!
oPlastering:
Normal
wear and tear on the club means plastering is sometimes needed. If
you have this skill … you can help!
oLight
carpentry: repair work and construction.
·During
the Curling Season:
oThe
Membership Desk: on Membership Draw nights, volunteers man this desk
selling the tickets and compiling the list of who has purchased them.
oPhone
Committee: some members do not have access to email. These are
personally called with news throughout the season. The numbers to
call are manageable and a team of people doing this makes it easy.
oBartending:
there are off-peak hours on Saturday’s and Sunday’s that could use a
few volunteers. If you’ve
never used the bar system before, training will be provided.
oSocial
functions:
·Decorating.
·Preparing
trays of sandwiches, veggies, etc.
If
you can spare a little time to volunteer, please contact:

There have been a number of queries of the Canadian Curling
Association about the new Children's Fitness Tax Credit (CFTC) and
whether curling is eligible.
Here is what we know and feel free to pass along this info to your
membership:
1. Here is the official media release:
www.fin.gc.ca/news07/06-002e.html and, while Minister
Flaherty mentions the following in his statement: "hockey, soccer,
karate, football, basketball, folk dancing, swimming, hiking,
horseback riding and many sailing activities" , the Canadian
government has not published a list of sports or activities that are
eligible for this tax credit. Our initial contact with the Canada
Revenue Agency has yielded the following interpretation. The
Children's Fitness Tax Credit will be based on an "honour system"
which means that each national sport organization (NSO) is left to
decide for themselves if they meet the criteria to issue receipts.
If they believe they do, and are prepared to show how if challenged
by CRA, then they should issue receipts. Ultimately it will be up to
CRA, through their review/audit of income tax returns, to make the
final determination if the program for which the credit is being
claimed indeed meets the criteria. The CRA is in the process of
identifying a contact person for the CFTC and once this person is in
place, we will get an official statement as to this eligibility
statement.
2. Based on the eligibility document the CRA published (
www.cra-arc.gc.ca/fitness/ ) the sport of curling meets all the
necessary criteria and we will be able to easily defend our position
if challenged by the CRA. Therefore, based on the criteria, parents
of children who participate in the sport of curling will be eligible
to take advantage of the tax credit. Moreover, it appears parents
will also be able to claim the cost of sending their children to
curling camps assuming the camps meet CRA criteria (
www.cra-arc.gc.ca/fitness/ ).
3. Parents will begin claiming the Children's Fitness Tax Credit for
the 2007 tax year . Therefore, payments made in 2006 for the
2006-2007 curling season will not be eligible for receipt.
Therefore, it is not urgent to get receipts issued as there is no
application for the 2006 tax year. In respect to receipts, the
Canadian Curling Association is now building an online official
receipt generator that will allow our clubs to create their own
unique receipts. This should be ready in the next few weeks.
4. We will be publishing this news in the next issue of the Business
of Curling magazine and we have a web page with this information and
it can be found here:
If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to call.
good curling!
